Long-Vowel Road

Description

Use this long-vowel sounds worksheet to provide practice for students learning to recognize the difference between short- and long-vowel sounds. Students read each one-syllable word and then mark the words with long-vowel sounds. As added fun, the correct answers will form a “road” for the car at the top of the page to reach the movie theater at the bottom. The correct answers include words with the vowel digraphs ai, ea, ee, and oa, as well as words with the VCe spelling pattern.

Extensions

Pick one of the vowel digraphs ai, ea, ee, or oa or the spelling pattern VCe and write it on the board. Then, have students circle the words in their worksheets that match that spelling pattern with a colored pencil or crayon. Call on students to share words they find and use them in sentences, as you record the words on the board.
