Description

These procedural writing activities can help beginning writers learn how to organize their writing by using sequence words. This printable PDF set includes 10 different how-to writing prompts with pictures to guide students as they write instructions for each step. Each prompt has three levels designed for writers at various stages.

  • Level 1: students trace the sequence word in each step and complete the sentence.
  • Level 2: students choose the correct sequence word for each step from a list of four.
  • Level 3: students choose the correct sequence word for each step from a list of seven.
Grades: 1-2
Suggested Uses

For a group writing activity, share a collection of how-to books, simple instructions, and easy recipes as model texts. Discuss how the steps are ordered and why sequence words help readers understand the text better. To help students visualize before they write, use props to demonstrate one of the prompts. Then, have each student complete a worksheet.

Extensions

Use the blank prompt for hands-on lessons. For example, get seeds, garden soil, and paper cups, and let students each grow a plant and then write the steps.
